The
Washington Society of
Professional Engineers
Educational Foundation
Purpose
The Washington Society of Professional Engineers
Educational Foundation (WSPEEF)
provides for a focal point
for funding and disbursement
of educational assistance
for engineering education in
the State of Washington.
Through local control of fundraising and spending, the
Washington State engineering
community is able to foster
engineering educational
support to deserving
individuals and
organizations that best fit
state needs.
The
sponsoring organization, the
Washington Society of
Professional Engineers (WSPE),
adopts those programs that
serve the educational goals
of the state.
History
The
Washington Society of
Professional Engineers
Educational Foundation was
organized and chartered as a
tax-exempt (IRS 501(c)(3))
educational foundation in
the State of Washington in
1982 as an outgrowth of the
need to provide engineering
scholarships without
reservation in Washington
State. The WSPEEF began
serving the needs of the
MATHCOUNTS program in 1984.
Other educational programs
such as Bridge Building and
Robotics have been added at
the Chapters’ request.
Goals
·
Provide engineering
scholarships to qualified
Washington State students.
·
Provide continuing financial
aid to deserving in-school
engineering students,
principally, in Washington
State colleges.
·
Provide non-monetary aid to
students and institutions.
·
Assist engineering colleges
with equipment and other
material needs to further
engineering education in
Washington State.
·
Support quality in the
engineering education
curricula in Washington
State colleges and
universities.
Fund Raising
Fund raising
is an integral part of the
WSPEEF activities. It is
accomplished in the
following ways:
·
Direct corporate
contributions to the WSPEEF
endowment fund.
·
Private contributions to the
WSPEEF endowment fund either
directly or via NSPE annual
dues check-off.
·
Dedicated scholarship by
individuals, WSPE chapters,
and corporations through the
WSPEEF scholarship process.
·
Grants from wills and
estates to the WSPEEF
endowment fund or as
dedicated scholarships.
·
Chapter fund raising for
educational activities (MATHCOUNTS,
Bridge Building, etc.).
Contributions made directly
to WSPEEF via check should
be made out to “WSPE
Educational Foundation”. The
check memo line should
indicate the intended fund.
·
“Scholarship Discretionary
Fund” for immediate
scholarship use.
·
“Scholarship Endowment Fund”
for the scholarship annuity.
·
“Chapter Scholarship Fund”
for Chapter scholarships.
·
Contributions for Chapter
activities such as
MATHCOUNTS, Bridge Building,
Robotics, etc. should
indicate the specific
activity.
·

Scholarship Selection
Selection of candidates for
scholarship grants are made
on the basis of engineering
interest, grades, scholastic
testing, activities outside
the classroom, and financial
need.
The
selection criteria are based
on the desires of the WSPE
membership, and selection is
made from the WSPE
scholarship pool or
identification by the WSPEEF.
The selection
process may be tailored to
donors to meet specific
criteria in engineering,
ethnic, gender, or financial
areas. Either the donor or
the WSPEEF at the donor’s
option may select the final
recipient.
Disbursement of Funds
Funds for
scholarships are disbursed
at the full level, without
administrative discount,
because the Foundation
administration and
recruitment of scholarship
candidates is conducted
entirely through voluntary
effort.
Funds for WSPE
educational programs (MATHCOUNTS,
Bridge Building, etc.) are
disbursed at the full level,
without administrative
discount, because the
Foundation administration is
conducted entirely through
voluntary effort.
Administrative
funding of the Foundation is
made possible by
contributions from the
overall WSPE membership.
Funds are deposited into
interest bearing accounts of
maximum yield from which the
actual scholarship funding
is drawn.
Organization
The governing
board of the WSPEEF is
comprised of 13 engineers,
all members of the
Washington Society of
Professional Engineers,
elected to operate the
Foundation as an independent
tax-exempt corporation of
the State of Washington. The
serving members of the Board
elect 12 of the members. The
13th member is the WSPE
Scholarship Chairman who is
a member, ex officio with
voting powers, by virtue of
his office within the
Washington Society of
Professional Engineers. The
officers of the Washington
Society of Professional
Engineers Educational
Foundation are the
President, Vice President,
Secretary, and Treasurer
elected from the governing
membership. Input to the
proceeding of the WSPEEF is
welcome from all sources.
